Oh what a wonder
Questions for the wondrous brain — Day 24 of 100
I had just left from reading at my first-ever open mic,
still enchanted and buoyant
when I opened my phone to a string of messages from Jorge,
I wonder what his brain is doing
when he’s not talking or nothing
just holding lovie
so relaxing
I immediately clocked to him and I,
that thought sounds like a poem,
in poetry mode now
Turns out, it was more than just a fleeting state of mind.
All the flashes throughout the day,
caught in the act of
clutching his lovie on camera,
day dreaming during a meal,
I’ve not been able to stop wondering ever since,
What is his brain doing?
Is it in a state of wonder too?
Can it also not believe it?
That these ordinary yet lovely bits,
all of us together
almost did not happen?
A brain that has done the most
ultrasounds, surgeries, MRIs
been doubted physically, mentally, spiritually
by neonatologists, neurologists, nurses.
by all, except
by Jorge and me,
by some family members,
by a handful of doctors and therapists.
A brain that keeps doing the most,
restoring by night
to keep working by day
new networks and pathways
synapses and connections
that work in mysterious ways,
a diagnosis that does not fit the bill
as in a bill that does not add up
what we expect is not what we see
as in what we think may not be.
But really,
what I really wonder is,
If his brain could talk,
what would it say?
Perhaps,
You never should’ve doubted me.
I am more than what you see.
I can persevere and overcome.
I can march to the beat of my own drum.
For today, I bid adieu.
For tomorrow, I build anew.
And us to you,
The sweetest of dreams,
our little lovie.
This is Day 24 of 100. Read the beginning here.
